My current work centres around Tubies. These 3D objects exist in the boundary of sculpture and painting. They are painterly but inhabit the 3D world of sculpture. . Please note that I have dropped the Tubie images into a virtual gallery space to give you an idea of the scale. And I am the blue suited figure wearing the Bucket head!
The first image show the stages of making – from a stamped on aluminium aircon duct to the finished work. Jumping up and down is the best way I have found to flatten the circular profile of the piping. I like the lived in feeling it gives the finished work too. An outline is then painted onto the primed surface. Did you notice the 2 sets of arms and legs?
‘Nice cup of tea’ was the next in the Tubie series. There is a lot of 1970s furniture on this one. From my childhood home -with its boxy green screened TV set, orange lamp and purple glass globe light. it was definitely a funky time to be alive.
I always thought of the Tubies as family – so in a gallery I would like them to displayed together rather than singly. And ideally the viewer would be able to walk through and among them. Rather than being set apart from them. The Bucket heads were made for a more immersive experience. Wearing one you will feel part of the artworks.
